Our bike overhaul class will cover the adjustment, maintenance, and repair of most of the major moving or adjustable parts on your bike. It is designed as an introductory level class for basic and intermediate level bike repairs. The only prerequisite for this class is a desire to learn. We encourage students with little or no previous bicycle repair experience to sign up. We work to create a non-intimidating, open, and supportive environment at the shop where everyone will feel comfortable.
The dates and times for the class are Saturdays from 9:30 AM – 12 PM, November 7, 14, 21, and December 5. (Note: No class on Nov. 28).
For this class, participants may bring their own bike or work on a bike that has been donated to SPOKES (the second option helps us to have repaired bikes for use in our Bike Library and Earn-a-Bike Programs, so it is a form of volunteer service on your part). If you are working on your own bike, used parts are available for purchase, as are new parts. Sorry, we do not have space for you to leave a bike you bring to SPOKES for the class between classes.
The classes covers the following specific topics:
How to use bike-specific tools
Clean and lubricate the stem, seatpost and chain
How to fix a flat/change a tire
Shifting adjustment and maintenance
Freewheels and Cassettes: removal and installation
Bottom bracket adjustment
Instead of a registration fee for the class, we ask for donations from students who are able to donate. A suggested amount is $10–$50 per class, or $40–$200 total. We don’t want money to be a barrier to learning bicycle maintenance, but we do need to pay our staff, our rent/utilities, and purchase supplies and tools. You may donate in person with cash or a credit card at SPOKES or online (https://givemn.org/organization/Cycles-For-Change). Please donate if you can and know that your donation helps us to better serve all interested participants.
